Key notes: Complex, but well balanced juniper, spice and citrus

Background

Made in rural Oxfordshire, at the Chalgrove Artisan Distillery, OX44 is all about that hand-crafted feel - even taking its name from the postcode area it is produced.

The base botanicals of juniper and coriander are added to the grain spirit to macerate for 24 hours before the rest – including angelica root, cardamom and black peppercorns – are added for distillation in their alembic copper still. The gin is then left to stand for five days to allow the flavours to fully infuse. OX44 isn’t chill-filtered, which means that not only is it packed full of flavour, but also magically goes a little cloudy when tonic is added.

Tasting Notes

On tasting OX44, no single flavour jumps out, instead offering a complex, but well balanced gin. Piney juniper, earthy spice from the coriander, and fresh citrus lemon are all there, with unusual almost floral notes, we’re guessing from the unusual botanical of heather. The whole thing is ultra-smooth in the mouth and fairly dry on the finish.

Gin and tonic: Lime slice

We reckon a classic slice of lime goes perfectly in an OX44 G&T, highlighting both the spice and citrus elements, whilst really making the juniper zing.
