If you could bottle the essence of Italy, then Malfy Gin would come pretty close to it. The distillery was established in 1906 in Moncalieri, just outside Turin, in an area famous for its alcohol production - Carpano, Cinzano and Martini Rossi are all based nearby.
The distinctive characteristic of Malfy is that most Italian of fruit, the lemon, and the Vergnano family, who now run the distillery, source theirs from both Sicily and the Amalfi coast. The lemon peel is steeped in wheat based alcohol before being pressed in a traditional basket press. The resulting liquid is then distilled with the other five botanicals at just 60 degrees in a stainless steel vacuum still ensuring that the zesty citrus flavours are maximised.
The gin is then bottled in beautiful traditional Italian glass bottles with unique blue cork stoppers. Even the eye-catching blue and yellow label represents the Mediterranean Sea and Italian lemons
There really is only one place to start with the taste of Malfy – LEMON. Tasted neat, the viscous mouthfeel and strong lemon combine to create something that is almost more like limoncello than gin.
However, alongside the dominant lemon, Malfy features five other botanicals - Tuscan juniper, coriander, cassia, liquorice, grapefruit peel and orange peel – and when tonic is added, these really start to come forwards.
After the expected lemon hit to start, the juniper starts to come through, followed by a herby depth. The whole experience is unsurprisingly refreshing and zesty, and whilst it may not be a favourite for classic London Dry lovers, there is certainly more to Malfy than just its lemon.
The Malfy team recommend their gin with the tasty Fever Tree Mediterranean tonic and lemon peel; the herbs of the tonic adding an extra dimension. However, as an alternative, going with regular tonic and a spring of rosemary cuts through the lemon of the gin and brings out the other botanicals.
With some of the world’s top vermouth makers based nearby, it is fitting that Malfy makes a unique and delicious Negroni. The strength of the lemon adds an unexpected zing, giving a freshness to the classic cocktail.
